What is a sacred cow?
A “sacred cow” is something that is “immune from criticism or attack.” As Bill Easum points out in Sacred Cows Make Gourmet Burgers: Ministry Anytime, Anywhere, By Anyone, sacred cows are more important than people in some cultures, since some people will literally starve to death while surrounded by their sacred cows.
The church’s sacred cow
Easum contends that established churches are dying while they protect the SACRED COW OF CONTROL – the insistence by pastors, staff, lay leaders, deacons, or elders to either control everything that happens in the congregation, to coordinate everything that happens, to know about everything before it happens, or to vote on every new issue or ministry.
